The new Indianapolis City-County failed to override two vetoes by former Mayor Greg Ballard.

The proposals would have raised the Council’s pay as well as mandated citizens report to police that their weapons were lost or stolen. Each measure only received 10 votes, 17 were needed to override a veto.

Indy Politics talked to Council President Maggie Lewis as well as Minority Leader Mike McQuillen about the votes.

We also spoke to them about Mayor Joe Hogsett’s agenda to fight crime, attack poverty and whether a tax increase would be needed to address what he says is a structural deficit of $50 million.

You can hear both Lewis and McQuillen in the Leon-Tailored Audio above.  Each segment is less than three minutes.
