As Indianapolis weighs the decision to develop a data center in Franklin Township near Google’s campus, Morgan County is already moving forward with its own ambitious data center project. Mike Dellinger, Executive Director of the Morgan County Economic Development Corporation, spoke with Indy Politics about the county’s efforts to bring a data center to Monroe Township, located near I-70 and State Road 39.
The project is taking shape on a 391-acre site that was rezoned in February, with plans to expand the campus to 551 acres. Initially launched in 2024, the data center will involve 11 property owners and offers tax incentives designed to attract investment. Dellinger said the project will create at least 200 new jobs, with wages expected to be 25% above the local median, providing a boost to the county’s workforce.
The development will also generate substantial property tax revenue, expected to start at $1 million annually. This revenue will contribute to local services and infrastructure, benefiting the broader community.
Dellinger acknowledged that while economic growth is vital, it must be done in a way that respects the county’s rural character. “Our goal is to foster economic opportunity while maintaining the lifestyle that makes Morgan County unique,” he said. Local water and energy resources will be utilized to support the data center’s operations, ensuring that the development aligns with the county’s long-term sustainability goals.
The Council has a public hearing next Monday.
