Carmel Clay’s West Clay Elementary School posted the highest share of students proficient in both English and math on the 2026 ILEARN, according to school-level results released Friday by the Indiana Department of Education.

At West Clay, 85.4% of the 308 students tested were proficient in both subjects. Statewide, 31.5% of students in grades 3 through 8 met that mark.

Aboite Elementary in MSD Southwest Allen County ranked second at 81.4%. Middlebury Community Schools’ Jefferson Elementary was third at 81.3%.

At the other end, none of the students tested at South Bend’s Coquillard Elementary were proficient in both subjects. South Bend Community School Corp. had four of the 10 lowest-scoring schools. Indianapolis Public Schools had two: Arlington Middle School, at 0.3%, and Robert Lee Frost School 106, at 1.5%.

The rankings are based on an IndyPolitics analysis of IDOE’s school-level data. They cover the 1,704 schools that tested at least 50 students in both subjects.

Statewide, about 42% of students were proficient in English language arts and about 43% in math. The state released those figures in August.

A new baseline

This was the first year all Indiana students in grades 3 through 8 took the revised ILEARN. The new format has three checkpoint tests during the year, followed by a shorter end-of-year exam. The State Board of Education also approved new proficiency cut scores this summer. That pushed the release of school-level results from the usual July to September.

Secretary of Education Katie Jenner has said the 2026 scores cannot be compared with prior years because of the changes, and state officials describe this year’s results as a new baseline.

The results carry added weight this year. ILEARN proficiency and growth will be primary factors in the A-F letter grades schools are scheduled to receive in December under the state’s new accountability system.

Change from 2025

IndyPolitics also compared each school’s 2026 results with its 2025 results. The comparison covers the 1,611 schools that tested at least 50 students both years and tested the same grades both years.

The median school’s rate was essentially unchanged, and slightly fewer than half of schools posted an increase.

Tawheed School, an independent non-public school, had the largest increase. Its rate rose from 27.3% to 47.1%, a gain of 19.8 percentage points. Lafayette School Corp.’s Vinton Elementary rose 19.2 points, from 25.6% to 44.8%.

Coram Deo Academy, also an independent non-public school, had the largest decrease. It fell 24.7 points, from 61.3% to 36.7%. MSD Martinsville’s Centerton Elementary fell 20.7 points, and Franklin Township’s New Bethel Elementary fell 18.7 points, from 36.6% to 17.9%. New Bethel was the only Marion County school among the 10 largest decreases.

Non-public schools in the comparison declined by about one point on average. Public schools were essentially flat.

Methodology: Rankings use IDOE’s school-total share of students proficient in both ELA and math. Schools with fewer than 50 students tested were excluded. Change figures exclude schools that tested different grades in 2025 and 2026. IDOE excludes ESA testers and suppresses results for groups of fewer than 10 students. RISE Learning Center, a special-education center operated by Southside Special Services of Marion County, was excluded from the rankings.
