A number of folks (particularly in Democratic circles) are wondering why Joe Donnelly is returning to Indiana.   Donnelly was the U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican and is stepping down to come back home to Indiana.

The big question is why?

Speculation has been that he will replace Jennifer McCormick and run for Governor.  There’s also the rumor that he would run for the U.S. Senate against Rep. Jim Banks.  Or, our personal favorite, coming back to breathe new life into the Indiana Democratic Party.

Well, guess what?  None of that is true, we’re told..

So why is Donnelly coming back?  Easy, he’s ready to come home.  That’s it.

As Ambassador to the Vatican, his job has been pretty much non-stop; particularly having to deal with two global conflicts, the war in the Ukraine (where he helped return 100 children by the Russians back to their parents) and Israeli military action in Gaza.

Donnelly is basically ready to do something else, like be a grandfather.  That’s it.   No big political agenda.

As we say at Nicky Blaine’s some days a cigar is just a cigar.
