At a meeting of the Party’s precinct committee chairs and vice chairs Tuesday evening, Myla A. Eldridge was elected as the new chair of the Marion County Democratic Party.
Eldridge, who takes office immediately, becomes the third woman to lead the party and the first African American to hold the position. She replaces Kate Sweeney Bell, who resigned last month.
“I’m honored to have earned the trust and support of my fellow Marion County Democrats,” said Eldridge. “We have so much to be proud of but also so much work to do. Electing more Democrats to office throughout Marion County is critical to safeguarding our democracy and continuing to move this city forward. I am excited and ready to get to work.”
Elridge had the support of Mayor Joe Hogsett and Congressman Andre Carson.
Out of the 508 eligible voters, 315 voters showed up and INdy Politics was told Eldridge won overwhelmingly as no other candidate reached double digits.
Elridge is also the Vice-Chair of the State Democratic Party.
