Saying he doesn’t believe in discrimination against anyone for who they are, who they love or what they believe, Indiana Governor Mike Pence called on lawmakers to make it clear the state’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) does not allow for discrimination.
Pence made the comments at a news conference today after days of bad publicity for the state regarding RFRA.
Pence says he believes in RFRA and that it had been mischaracterized by some in the media. However, he acknowledged the state could have done a better job of explaining it.
Indiana lawmakers are looking at “clarifying” the law so that it does not promote discrimination. One option is exempting local human rights ordinances. Pence did not support adding sexual orientation and gender identity to the state’s civil rights code, however, he repeated his belief that no one should suffer discrimination.
