A familiar statewide candidate is now aiming for Washington.
Destiny Wells has officially filed to run for Congress in Indiana’s 7th Congressional District, setting up what could become the most consequential Democratic primary challenge to Rep. Andre Carson in years.
Wells is not new to Indiana politics. She previously ran for statewide office, seeking both Secretary of State and Attorney General, positioning herself as a reform-minded candidate focused on government accountability and voting rights. Those campaigns were unsuccessful, but they gave her statewide name recognition, experience running a race, and a network of political supporters that could prove useful in a congressional bid.
Carson released the following statement
“It’s a good day for democracy when more people run for elected office. New reports are showing that Democrats are on the path to take back the House and Senate. We need to continue showing that Democrats encourage free speech. We encourage healthy debate. My priority is taking back the House this fall so we have more tools to stop Donald Trump’s cruel regime.”
Carson has held the seat since 2008 after succeeding his grandmother, the late Julia Carson.
