I’m an incumbent candidate for the Lebanon Community School Corporation Board of Trustees and I want to tell you why I am not running for this position.  I’m not running because it is affirming and enjoyable to be yelled at and disparaged in public.  I’m not running because I have a hidden agenda to implement or because our school district has no problems.  I’m also not running for the incredible pay and benefits that we receive.

There are, however, many reasons I have decided to place my name on the ballot again.  First, I believe that all students have the right to the best educational experience we can offer, and that no matter which building they are in, all students should have the same opportunities and resources.  Secondly, I support our teachers and want to ensure that they are compensated fairly and that they know that we value them and the impact they have on the lives of our students. Thirdly, I believe that an investment in our schools is an investment in our community. One of my first tasks as a newly elected school board member was to hire a superintendent. I’m glad to say we hired a great one who has a vision for and focus on the potential and growth of our district. With that in mind, In May of this year, we passed a referendum to enhance all our schools and increase student safety and educational opportunities, and I want to see this exciting project to fruition.

Finally, I’m running because of my sons. In May, both of my sons will have graduated from Lebanon community schools. Teachers, coaches, and staff have greatly impacted my sons and have prepared them to enter the next phase of their lives not only with an education that has prepared them for college, but with the knowledge that they are valued and respected. My sons have made lasting friendships, learned significant life lessons, and have developed skills that will propel them as adults.  I’m thankful for the positive experience my sons have had and want that same experience for every student.  Being a board member allows me to be part of a collaborative team that is focused on what is best for our students, making data driven decisions, and engaging with the community that has entrusted us with this privilege.  Oh, and getting to sign the diplomas of both of my sons is pretty special, too.
