Indiana U.S. Senator Dan Coats today came to the defense of his colleague John McCain following attacks by flamboyant potential Presidential candidate Donald Trump.

Trump has come under fire for questioning and criticizing McCain’s status as a war hero for the time her served in prisoner of war camp during Vietnam.

Coats issued the following statement…

“John McCain endured over five years in a Vietnamese prison camp in service to the country he loves. He turned down early release and still bears scars from the misery he suffered. Senator McCain is an American hero, period.  In one of his books, Donald Trump writes, ‘If you stay silent, people will eventually make fools of themselves without your help at all.’ While candor is refreshing, The Donald’s bombastic comments about Senator McCain reveal what he is really all about: The Donald.”

Trump has also come under fire from numerous Presidential candidates and other national elected officials and figures.
