Former CD 7 Congressional candidate Gabe Whitley was sentenced Tuesday to three months in prison and one year probation for filing fraudulent federal campaign reports.
The U.S. Government had recommended six months, while Whitley’s public defender asked for probation only.
Judge James Sweeny split the difference.
Whitley is also order to get mental health treatment and substance abuse counseling.
During the May 2024 primary, Whitley filed reports claiming he had raised hundreds of thousands of dollars in contributions from donors who did not exist or never contributed to his campaign.
Whitley tried to blame his crimes on mental disabilities, but the court downplayed those arguments.
Whitley will be sentenced at a later date.
He also faces felony state criminal charges as well for posting photos of Indy Politics publisher Abdul-Hakim Shabazz and encouraging violence against him.
