Indianapolis City-County Councilor Keith Graves is facing allegations of sexual misconduct, and while details remain scarce, the political fallout has begun.
Graves has stepped down as Chair of the Council’s Education Committee while the situation develops. Council President Vop Osili issued a statement acknowledging the seriousness of the allegations:
“As Council President, I take any allegation of sexual misconduct with the utmost seriousness… Councilor Graves is stepping down… as the details of this matter continue to unfold.”
Osili also noted the Council has no authority to investigate personal misconduct unless it involves financial, legislative, or conflict-of-interest issues.
Council Majority Leader Maggie Lewis also weighed in:
“The residents of Indianapolis deserve a city government that is accountable, honest, and reflective of the community’s highest aspirations… If information emerges that negatively affects the integrity of the caucus, we are dedicated to taking all necessary actions to do what is right.”
Lewis said she’s aware of the allegations and is monitoring them closely. She urged patience and asked the public to respect the privacy of those involved.
