More than 177,000 Marion County voters had cast ballots as of 1 p.m. Tuesday, putting turnout at 29%, according to the Marion County Clerk’s Office. That already exceeds the county’s final turnout in the 2014 midterm, which was 24.7%. Final turnout was 34% in 2022 and 47.8% in 2018.

Elsewhere, about 100,000 ballots had been cast in Hamilton County, 75,000 in Allen County and 21,000 in Vigo County.

Department of Justice election monitors in plain clothes spent 15 to 20 minutes outside the City-County Building late Tuesday morning, according to Dan Goldblatt of the Marion County Clerk’s Office. Goldblatt said the monitors stayed near the curb and asked some people questions, then left before noon. He said he had not seen them himself and that no precinct inspectors had reported problems.

The DOJ is sending 12 monitors to Marion County on Election Day, according to the Marion County Election Board. The board says the monitors are not law enforcement and are not allowed inside vote centers.

Polls close at 6 p.m. Voters in line by 6 p.m. can still vote.
