A clerical error by the Hamilton County Democratic Party chairman has led to the misallocation of Democratic Party delegates in multiple legislative districts, a mistake that officials now acknowledge stemmed from a simple copy-and-paste error — but one with real implications for party representation.

Indy Politics had previously heard concerns about irregularities in the delegate numbers circulating within party and election-administration circles. Those concerns were publicly confirmed last week by The Hamilton County Reporter, which first reported that the county’s delegate allocations did not match figures provided by the Indiana Democratic Party.

According to party officials, the Indiana Democratic Party had notified Hamilton County late last year that 162 delegates should be allocated across nine legislative districts based on established turnout formulas. Those numbers were intended to guide the county’s delegate selection process ahead of upcoming party conventions.

Instead, incorrect figures were entered into county records, resulting in some districts receiving fewer delegates than they were entitled to under party rules. The error did not involve ballots or vote totals, but rather the administrative handling of delegate data — a distinction election officials have emphasized even as they work to correct the problem.

Party  officials have since acknowledged the mistake and indicated that revised allocations will be issued.  They said the error occurred during the transfer of data between internal documents and that they are taking steps to ensure the corrected numbers are implemented before further delegate selection proceedings move forward.
