Newly released body camera footage is putting fresh public attention on the child exploitation case involving Jonathan Peternel, the son of a prominent Indiana pastor with close ties to Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith.

The video, released this week by Law & Crime Sidebar with Jesse Weber, shows investigators confronting Peternel and members of his family after a cyber tip from Snapchat led detectives to the family’s Pendleton home.

The footage captures the moment investigators laid out what they described as a disturbing digital trail that ultimately led to Jonathan Peternel’s arrest and conviction on child exploitation charges.

According to the latest reporting from The Indiana Citizen, Peternel, 24, was sentenced in February to six years, with four years to be served in the Indiana Department of Correction and two years suspended to probation after pleading guilty to one Level 4 felony count of child exploitation and three counts of possession of child sexual abuse material. He must also register as a lifetime sex offender.

The case has carried political reverberations because Jonathan Peternel’s father, Nathan Peternel, remains closely linked to Beckwith and Life Church.

Nathan Peternel has been described as a longtime mentor and close associate of Beckwith, and the two previously co-hosted the podcast Jesus, Sex & Politics, which frequently blended religious teaching with public policy and political commentary. Reporting indicates the podcast stopped releasing new episodes shortly after investigators searched the Peternel home, and at least two episodes were later removed.

That connection is what pushes this beyond a routine criminal case and squarely into Indiana political conversation.

Until now, much of the public record had been built from probable cause affidavits, court filings, and sentencing reports. The newly released bodycam footage offers the first direct visual look at the law enforcement confrontation that triggered months of scrutiny around Life Church and Beckwith’s orbit.

According to court filings, investigators traced the case back to a cyber tip received by the Hamilton County Metro Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Authorities later executed a search warrant and seized multiple electronic devices. A forensic review uncovered more than 200 files of child sexual abuse material, according to court records.

Notably, prior reporting indicates Beckwith was not present at the sentencing and has not publicly commented on the case, despite his longstanding connection to Nathan Peternel and Life Church.

For Indiana political watchers, the release of the bodycam footage is likely to reignite questions not only about the criminal case itself, but also about the broader political and religious network surrounding one of the state’s most polarizing elected officials.

It remains to be seen what effect, if any, this renewed scrutiny may have on the 2026 GOP primary, where Beckwith has already publicly backed several challengers to incumbent Senate Republicans.
