Proponents of school choice and charters say proposed changes to the school funding formula could have a negative impact on thousands of families that attend charter schools.
Lawmakers have proposed changes to the “complexity index” portion of the school funding formula, which determines how many additional dollars schools receive for “at risk” youth. Currently schools receive extra dollars for each child receiving free or reduced lunch. House Republicans want to change that to just those receiving free lunch, while Senate Republicans want to use those families receiving government welfare as the standard.
Betsy Burdick and Tosha Saylers, Hoosiers for Quality Education say the Senate proposal could have a much bigger negative impact on poor families than House plan.
