The Indiana House Roads and Transportation Committee heard legislation Tuesday morning that would provide more funding for Marion County roads.
SB 283 would base road funding on the population of the entire county, as opposed to the city’s fire districts.
Currently, Indianapolis gets funding based on the population of its fire districts, however, Pike, Wayne and Decatur Townships have their own fire districts and therefore are not counted in the city’s population.
It’s estimated that the population is about 196,000 residents to the tune of about $8 million in revenue.
Lawmakers are also considering other measures such as increasing the wheel tax and applying for community crossing dollars.
Lawmakers did not vote on the legislation today. A vote will take place next week.
