Indiana lawmakers passed legislation Monday that would provide more funding for Marion County roads.
SB 283 would base road funding on the population of the entire county, as opposed to the city’s fire districts.
Currently, Indianapolis gets funding based on the population of its fire districts; however, Pike, Wayne and Decatur Townships have their own fire districts and therefore are not counted in the city’s population.
It’s estimated that the population is about 196,000 residents to the tune of about $8 million in revenue.
However, the city must match those funds, which can only be used for road repair.
Also, there will be a summer study committee on state roads.
The bill passed unanimously.
