Indiana’s unemployment rate dropped to 3.7% in May, outperforming the national rate of 4.2%, according to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development,

At the same time, the state’s labor force participation rate stood at 63.7%, outpacing the national average of 62.4%

That means a larger share of Hoosiers aged 16 and older are actively employed or seeking work—a key metric of economic health. Those not counted include retirees, students, caregivers, and people unable to work due to illness or disability

Indiana’s total labor force reached 3,485,635 in May, with 2,851,400 employed in the private sector—an increase of 8,400 jobs from April  Job gains were seen across multiple industries:

  • Private Educational & Health Services: +3,800

  • Leisure & Hospitality: +2,100

  • All Other: +1,300

  • Professional & Business Services: +1,200

  • Manufacturing: +700

  • Construction: +700

As of June 1, Indiana had 87,114 open job postings, and 21,755 continued unemployment insurance claims were filed for the week ending June 7.
