The only public debate between the candidates for Indiana Secretary of State featured just two of the three running for office.

Republican Diego Morales skipped the debate sponsored by the League of Women Voters; Democrat Destiny Wells and Libertarian Jeff Mauer showed up.

The League made several attempts to reach out to Morales to participate in the debate, but he never got back to them.

The two hit on themes they have been stressing all campaign season.  Wells hit on voter access while Maurer reiterated his call for paper audits in all counties.

Wells said she wanted to increase voter participation, while Maurer pushed for election audits and receipts.

When it came to Morales’ absence,  Maurer said the fact that Morales didn’t show up tonight shows how “toxic” the system is, and he added Morales was “so confident” that he’ll win this election, that he didn’t need to debate.

According to his campaign’s Facebook page, Morales was the Warrick County GOP Dinner.

You can hear the two in the Leon-Tailored audio above.  The debate, moderated by Laura Wilson of the University of Indianapolis, ran for about an hour.   Mauer and Wells spoke to the media afterward.
