Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC) Chairman Jim Atterholt is stepping down next month.
Atterholt has notified Governor Eric Holcomb Monday that he plans to retire from public service, effective January 12, 2018.
Atterholt was appointed the chairman of the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission by Governor Holcomb on February 9, 2017. Governor Mitch Daniels originally appointed Atterholt as chairman of the Commission, and he served from 2010 to 2014. He had a break in his service at the Commission to serve as chief of staff to Governor Mike Pence from 2014 through 2016.
Atterholt says of his decision, “After 30 years of public service, it is with mixed emotions that I respectfully announce my retirement. I am so very grateful to Governor Holcomb for the opportunity to serve as Chairman of the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission. My bride of 31 years, Brenda, has an opportunity to transfer her job to Fort Myers Beach, Florida, and we are looking forward to life at a slower pace.”
Before serving at the Commission, he was Commissioner for the Indiana Department of Insurance under Governor Daniels for more than four years. He was elected and served two terms as a member of the Indiana General Assembly from 1998 to 2002. He also has worked as chief of staff in Washington, D.C., and later as district director in Indiana for a member of the United States Congress where his responsibilities included energy issues.
With Atterholt’s retirement, the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission Nominating Committee must convene to evaluate candidates and then submit the nominations of three individuals to the governor to fill the vacated Commissioner position.
