The Indiana Senate passed legislation by a vote of 38-10 that would repeal ISTEP in 2017.

House Bill (HB) 1395, as authored by State Rep. Bob Behning (R-Indianapolis), would create a commission to examine Indiana’s system for measuring K-12 performance.  Because ISTEP would be eliminated, this commission would make recommendations for the next generation of assessments for Indiana students.

“Moving forward, it is important that we address the concerns students, parents and educators have surrounding ISTEP,” said Behning, chair of the House Committee on Education. “I am confident that the next generation of assessment will meet the needs of students, while ensuring they exemplify Indiana’s high academic standards.”

The House passed the legislation 86-11, earlier this month.
