Embattled Indiana Secretary of State Diego Morales will have a challenger next year.

Knox County Clerk Dave Shelton has told Indy Politics that he plans to challenge Diego at next year’s Indiana State Convention.

He says he wants to put the Secretary of State’s Office “back in its lane,” referring to Morales’s tendency to get involved in issues that do not involve the Secretary of State.

When asked about Morales’ international travels, Shelton said, “I’m running for Indiana Secretary of State,  I’m not the U.S. Secretary of State.  Any international travel I do will never be on the taxpayers’ dime.”

Shelton says he is building his team, and a formal announcement is scheduled for the first week in May.

The Secretary of State is chosen at the State Convention by delegates, who are selected by voters in the May primary.
