When it comes to fiscal responsibility, compared to other states in the country, Indiana ranks pretty well, but that’s about it according to a new rankings list published last week by U.S. News & World Report.
In its 2019 rankings of states, Indiana came in sixth when it comes to fiscal stability. However, Indiana ranked much lower in other categories such as education, health care, and the environment.
Here is how the state ranked in each category.
- Health Care – 40th
- Education – 22nd
- Economy – 28th
- Infrastructure – 37th
- Opportunity – 12th
- Fiscal Stability – 6th
- Crime and Corrections – 34th
- Natural Environment – 48th
Overall, the state ranked 36th. It ranked 33rd last year. New Hampshire came in first place this year, while Louisiana ranked 50th.
According to U.S. News & World Report, the Best States ranking of U.S. states draws on thousands of data points to measure how well states are performing for their citizens.
More weight was accorded to some state measures than others, based on a survey of what matters most to people. Health care and education were weighted most heavily. Then came state economies, infrastructure, and the opportunity states offer their citizens. Fiscal stability followed closely in weighting, followed by measures of crime & corrections and a state’s natural environment.
