The Senate Elections Committee has made changes to its maps regarding Marion County.
Map author, Senator Eric Koch, says the changes were based on the Democratic maps which showed there was no racially based voting in Indianapolis and therefore lawmakers did not have to be concerned about violating the federal Voting Rights Act.
The amendment was approved unanimously.
The Committee turned down several Democratic amendments, including one that would have created an independent commission for 2031.
The maps now go to the full Senate for more possible amendments on Thursday.
You can hear the Committee testimony as well as from Julia Vaughn of Common Cause discuss their plans to take the fight for independent redistricting commissions to the local level in the Leon-Tailored Audio above.
