Indy Politics talks to Republican State Senator Rod Bray about legislation that would give direction to local police departments regarding video footage from police body cams, such as how it should be stored and when it is accessible to the public.
House Bill 1019 dictates under what circumstances these videos are accessible to the public. It also provides guidance to law enforcement agencies for how long they are required to store these videos. The bill was amended during the Senate committee hearing, switching the burden of proof to the law enforcement agency to allow for more openness and transparency.
The legislation passed out of the Senate Committee on Judiciary 7-1.
Bray says the bill balances the rights of law enforcement, as well as those on tape, and the public’s right to know.
