I’m out of town later this week, which means one of two things is about to happen. Either, as tradition dictates, something politically stupid will happen that impacts all of Indiana, or one of you takes the wheel.
It will probably be both.
Indy Politics is looking for a guest editorial. 500 to 600 words, any Indiana politics or policy subject you actually care about. Redistricting. Property taxes. The Secretary of State race, which at this point has more candidates than a Marion County pre-primary (formerly known as slating) convention. School referenda. Whatever your corner of state or local government is doing that made you put your coffee down.
What I’m looking for: a point of view and the nerve to defend it. Sharp is welcome. Funny is better. Dull is the only thing I won’t forgive.
What I’m not looking for: a press release with the letterhead removed, a 600-word thank-you to your own organization, or anything that reads like it went through three rounds of communications staff.
The fine print, because I am also a lawyer and cannot help myself:
– Opinions are free. Facts are not. If you state something as fact, be ready to send me what it’s based on.
– If you’re going to say a named, living person committed a crime or took a bribe, you’d better have the paper.
– Original work, not published anywhere else first.
– I may edit for length and clarity, or pass entirely. Nothing personal.
– Include a one-line bio and a photo.
Deadline is Saturday, Sept. 19, for publication Sunday or Monday. Earlier is better — if I have to verify something, I’d rather do it Wednesday than Saturday night.
