Members of the Indiana Black Legislative Caucus say their 2019 legislative agenda will help Indianapolis tackle its record-breaking murder rates by providing a holistic approach to addressing crime and violence.

At a news conference this morning, lawmakers said their efforts to increase teacher pay, pass a hate crimes law, allow more Hoosiers to get back their drivers licenses and studying gun-related violence will all benefit the city in the long run.

According to IMPD,  Indianapolis had 158 murders last year, the most in its history.  African-Americans are about 27 percent of the population but were 80 percent of this year’s murder victims.
