A top official at the Indiana Department of Homeland Security says when it comes to being prepared for natural disasters, Hoosiers should pay close attention to Hurricane Harvey and its aftermath.

John Erickson says the hurricane and subsequent flooding should be a lesson for Hoosiers to be prepared for a natural disaster.

So far there have been 23 confirmed deaths due to the hurricane, now a tropical depression.

Erickson says Hoosiers should have an emergency kit, proper provisions, and a most importantly a plan to leave the area if necessary.
