Indiana Governor Mike Pence is expected to announce today a road funding plan sources say could total nearly $1 billion.
Although administration officials will not provide details, sources say the proposal the Governor will announce the state spending close to $1 billion over the next few years to tackle its infrastructure issues.
Sources believe the plan is expected to be paid for through a combination of the sales tax on gasoline, the transportation contributions to the state’s budget surplus, and new revenue.
Indy Politics is also told that much of the funding will be front-loaded for the first couple of years to address the state’s most critical needs, meanwhile the Governor is expected to ask the legislature to finally address the road funding formula in the 2017 legislative session.
The Governor has a news conference scheduled for this afternoon to formally announce the plan.
He has come under fire lately from Democrats as well some some union groups for the condition of Indiana’s roads.
