The Indiana House Roads and Transportation Committee passed legislation Tuesday morning that would provide more funding for Marion County roads.

SB 283 would base road funding on the population of the entire county, as opposed to the city’s fire districts.

Currently, Indianapolis gets funding based on the population of its fire districts, however, Pike, Wayne and Decatur Townships have their own fire districts and therefore are not counted in the city’s population.

It’s estimated that the population is about 196,000 residents to the tune of about $8 million in revenue.

The measure now heads to the full House for further amendments and a final vote.
