A proposal being considered by the Indianapolis City-County Council could fine certain businesses if they don’t comply with proposed rules on reporting energy usage.

Under Proposal 185, in 2024, businesses with more than 50,000 square feet would have to collect and report to the city how much energy they use. If they don’t, they could be fined $100 for the first offense and $250 for subsequent offenses.

The point of the ordinance is to help the city promote “sustainability”.

Indy Politics spoke with Republican City-County Councilor Michael Hart about the measure.

We also spoke with Hart about crime and other issues facing the city.
