With 2018 nearly over it looks Indianapolis may dodge a bullet when it comes to another year of record-breaking murders.

As of November 28, the city had 142 murders.  That number was 148 last year at this time.

So far the city has averaged a murder every 2.34 day which puts the city on track for at least 155 murders by the end of the year.  The city hit 156 murders in 2017.

Here is a breakdown of some of the statistics so far this year…

  •  80-percent of the victims had criminal histories, while 75-percent of the suspects did.
  • Seventy-four percent of the murders involved a black victim, even though blacks are less than 30 percent of the population.
  • 60 percent of the murders occur on the city’s north/northeast side.
  • The combined average age of victims is 32.  The combined average age of the suspects was 34.
  • In 64 percent of the cases, the relationship between the victim and the suspect was unknown.
  • Only 57 of the murders were known to motivated by a fight or domestic dispute.
  • 82 percent of the deaths were caused by gunshots.
  • Nearly half the homicides occurred in January, May, August, and September.
  • Saturday was the day most murders occurred.
  • And murders were likely to take place between 9 p.m. and midnight.
