Back in June the city of Indianapolis was on track for a record year of murders.  Today, the city is down three murders from last year.

Much of that has been the result of the hard work of IMPD and groups like the Ten Point Coalition.

So far there have been 129 murders in Indianapolis, the following is a list of stats based on data provided by the Department of Public Safety from January 1 – November 20.

Of the 129 murder victims, local adult criminal histories were found for 100 (76%) of the victims. These 100 people  accounted for 366 adult felony arrests.

Where criminal  histories were found:

  • 43 (43%) had a previous weapons arrest
  • 62 (62%) had a previous drug arrest
  • 65 (65%) had a previous crimes against persons arrest.

Of the 64 suspects where a name was known, prior local adult criminal histories were found for 52 (81%) of the suspects.  These 52 people accounted for 197 adult felony arrests:

  • 25 (49%) had a previous weapons arrest
  • 29 (57%) had a previous drug arrest
  • 37 (71%) had a previous crimes against persons arrest

There has been four juvenile murder victim this year and one suspect under the age of 18.

The racial relationship between victims and their suspects was as follows…

  • Black victim – Black assailant = 42
  • Black victim – White assailant = 1
  • Black victim – Hispanic assailant = 0
  • Black victim – Unknown assailant = 59
  • White victim – White assailant = 11
  • White victim – Black assailant = 6
  • White victim – Hispanic assailant = 0
  • White victim – Unknown assailant = 12
  • Hispanic victim – Hispanic assailant = 0
  • Hispanic victim – Black assailant = 2
  • Hispanic victim – White assailant = 1
  • Hispanic victim – Unknown assailant = 3
  • Asian victim – Asian assailant = 0
  • Asian victim – Black assailant = 0
  • Unknown victim – Unknown assailant = 0

Twenty-four (19%) of the 129 murders were known to have been  motivated by drugs.

Twenty-four (19%) of the victims of known drug-related murders died as the result of gunshot wounds.

More than 70% of the city’s murders occurred outside of IMPD’s focus areas.

Blacks are about 25% of Indy’s population, and have been 76% of the murder victims.

Murders in Indy are most likely to take place on Fridays between the hours of 9 p.m. and 10 p.m.  And fights and arguments are the largest cause of murders.
