The city of Indianapolis is trending towards having another one of its most violent years in the last decade.
So far there have been 59 murders in Indianapolis, that puts the city on track for 157 murders by the end of the year.
The following is a list of stats based on data provided by the Department of Public Safety from January 1 – May 17.
Of the 53 murder victims, local adult criminal histories were found for 45 (76%) of the victims. These 45 people accounted for 125 adult felony arrests.
Where criminal histories were found:
- 14 (31%) had a previous weapons arrest
- 18 (40%) had a previous drug arrest
- 24 (53%) had a previous crimes against persons arrest.
Of the 38 suspects where a name was known, prior local adult criminal histories were found for 36 (50%) of the suspects. These 38 people accounted for 89 adult felony arrests:
- 12 (61%) had a previous weapons arrest
- 5 (14%) had a previous drug arrest
- 8 (22%) had a previous crimes against persons arrest
There have been four juvenile murder victims this year and two suspects under the age of 18.

Blacks are about 25% of Indy’s population and have been 73% of the murder victims.
Most murders, 54%, occurred on the north and northwest sides of town.
89% were by gunshots.
Sundays had the most murders so far.
February had the most murders, 20, while March had the fewest, 6.
