One Marion County Democratic candidate for Sheriff says despite claims by his opponents, the bulk of his support is from grassroots activists and voters and not Republicans.

Former IMPD detective Bill Benjamin is challenging Kerry Forestal.   Forestal has been backed by the party, Mayor Joe Hogsett and outgoing Sheriff John Layton.   And while there has been no public polling in the race, Indy Politics is told it is very close and could go either way.

Layton recently sent out a letter this week, essentially saying Benjamin was not really a Democrat and was being backed by Republicans.

In an interview with Indy Politics and WIBC radio, Benjamin said he was getting support from all over the county, regardless of their race, age or political affiliation.

You can hear Benjamin in the Leon-Tailored audio above.

Each segment runs about 9 minutes.
